Kennebunkport, Maine
Known the world over, Kennebunkport is just a short drive from Sea Mist, and a must while you visit. Kennebunkport is a picture perfect seaside town with a delightful downtown, called Dock Square, that leads to the dramatic Ocean Avenue where cottages and seaside mansions dot the coast along with Walkers Point, President Bush’s family compound (also called the Summer White House during his presidency). But there is more to Kennebunkport than the ‘Port with its boutiques, jewelry stores and waterfront eateries. There is Lower Village, also called Taint town since it’aint the Port and it aint Kennebunk. Lower Village is on the west side of the Kennebunk River, and offers more shops and great restaurants, and leads to the sister town of Kennebunk where you will find historic sea captains’ homes along Summer Street, the most famous of which is the Wedding Cake House.
Kennebunk has several unique beaches, from Kennebunk Beach, Gooches and Mothers Beach all located along Sea Road to Beach Ave, to Colony Beach off Ocean Avenue, and Goose Rocks Beach to the far north east. A great way to explore the Kennebunks is by water, a sailing trip, or by kayak or canoe up and down the Kennebunk River, or in Cape Porpoise Harbor – a beautiful working harbor for fisherman.
Kennebunkport is a great town to explore in all seasons. In fact, Christmas Prelude is the most popular time of year here, when this postcard town turns into a Rockwell holiday scene with caroling and tree lighting.
